Book Reviews Editor, Graduate Journal for Food Studies, 2016 – 2018
As the Graduate Journal for Food Studies has a mission to predominantly publish graduate students, my role as the Book Reviews Editor was to help young scholars get acquainted with the particulars of academic writing. This meant guiding writers through their first draft and then providing them with feedback on their arguments, writing style and format until the review was fit to be published. By teaching others, I learned how to become a better writer myself, but most importantly, how to provide encouraging, clear and actionable feedback and develop writing abilities that translate beyond academia.
Assistant Editor, NOVEL: A Forum on Fiction. 2016 – 2018
My position for the journal NOVEL: A Forum on Fiction, covered two main tasks. On the one hand, I was tasked to edited and fact-check articles and book reviews and to correspond with the authors. On the other, I was tasked to organize and moderate a weekly reading group in the English department, in preparation for the annual NOVEL Symposium to be held the following semester. I selected readings and materials to be discussed with the members of the group and supervised the draft on the upcoming conference “What is Abstract and What is Concrete in the Novel?”.
Member of the Center for Language Studies Think-Tank, Brown University. 2015 – 2017
I was selected and invited by the head of Brown University’s Center for Language Studies to be a member of the CLS Think-Tank, a group dedicated to imagining the future of language studies at Brown, sharing innovative pedagogical tools across language departments, increasing the appeal of small language programs, gathering data on the usefulness of a language degree among Brown Alumnae and drafting articles for the CLS website. My time on the Think-Tank provided me with the opportunity to experience the administrative challenges that accompany pedagogical challenges.
